A MAN has died after a serious crash on a Hampshire motorway.

The M3 was shut between the junctions for Eastleigh and Winchester following the incident, which happened at about 5.30am on Wednesday.

All lanes were closed but have now reopened.

Hampshire Constabulary has confirmed that a 45-year-old man, who was driving a Vauxhall Astra, was pronounced dead at the scene.

His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by officers.

Inspector Kirsty Shannon said: “Due to the seriousness of this collision the motorway had to be closed for a couple of hours to ensure a thorough investigation of the scene.

“We know that this has caused significant disruption to motorists this morning and we would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused.

“We always work hard to ensure that any road closure is lifted as soon as possible and we would like to thank motorists for their patience while we dealt with this incident.”

The 45-year-old man from Bournemouth was the only person involved in the crash.

As a result of the motorway closure there were serious traffic problems across the south of the county.

Drivers in Eastleigh are facing more problems and the A335 is closed on the Allbrook link to the M3 after a lorry jackknifed on a roundabout.

Tailbacks are currently estimated to be three hours long.

A Highways England statement says: "The incident was reported shortly after 5.30am and the eastbound carriageway between junction 12 at Eastleigh and junction 11 at Winchester is expected to be closed for several hours while Hampshire Police carries out an investigation.

"Highways England’s traffic officers are currently working with the emergency services at the scene, and a diversion is in place.

"Drivers are being encouraged to allow extra time and to consider using alternative routes."

Anyone with information on the M3 crash is asked to call police on 101, quoting reference number 105, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
