A MURDER probe has been launched and armed police were deployed after a man was killed in a late-night incident in a Southampton street.

Armed police descended on Northam after 39-year-old Kirpal Sanghera was assaulted on the junction of Union Road and Radcliffe Road, at around 11.50pm on Monday.

Mr Sanghera was taken to Southampton General Hospital, where he later died. His next of kin have been informed.

Police announced they had arrested a 42-year-old man from Southampton on suspicion of murder.

Southampton District Commander Superintendent Ali Heydari said: “We understand that serious incidents such as this will be concerning.

“Please do speak to officers on patrol or call us at Southampton Central on 101.”

A spokesperson for the force said it was called to a report of a seriously injured man on the junction of Union Road and Radcliffe Road, at around 11.50pm on Monday.

The spokesperson added: “Anyone with information should contact the Major Crime team at Southampton Central police station on 101 quoting Operation Stereo.

“Alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

“We are particularly keen to speak to the occupants of two vehicles that passed the Union Road/Radcliffe Road area at around 11.50pm.”
