A 'BELOVED son and brother' was killed in a late-night motorway crash after stopping to talk to police.

Nathan Sedgewicke, 41, died on the M3 after being struck by at least one vehicle.

Police watchdogs are deciding whether to launch an investigation following the incident, which happened between junctions 12 and 13 at about 1am on Sunday, September 10.

His family said: "Nathan was a beloved son and brother who put a smile on everyone's face with his quick wit and humour.

"He was extremely kind and will be missed by everyone who loved and knew him."

Hampshire Constabulary closed the motorway for almost seven hours following the incident, and has so far refused to say if Mr Sedgewicke, who lived at Hempson Avenue, Slough, was being chased or followed by officers when he pulled over.

An Independent Police Complaints Commission spokesman told the Daily Echo: “Any death or serious injury following contact with police has to be referred to us by law.

“Hampshire police informed us about the incident on the M3 and we have requested a paper referral.

“Once that letter arrives we will make an assessment and either investigate the incident ourselves, using our own staff, or send it back to them for a local investigation.”

Funded by the Home Office, the IPCC is an independent organisation that investigates incidents involving the police by interviewing officers, taking witness statements and analysing any CCTV footage.

An IPCC spokesman said: “We consider whether action could be taken to help prevent a similar matter happening again and will say if we think lessons could be learned by the police.”

Anyone who saw the accident can call police on 101, quoting Operation Building or crime reference number 44170350566.
