SUSPENDED 100 feet in the air and strapped in, Southampton food lovers are being offered a ‘once in a lifetime opportunity’.

Southampton in the Sky will take flight today at Guildhall Square, with restaurants, bars and ice cream parlours all gearing up ready to take visitors skyward.

For those who haven’t got a head for heights, it may be more of a stomach churning experience, with views across the city accompanied by a drink in hand.

Rising above the Guildhall, a crane will raise 22 guests, chefs and a kitchen into the sky for the height of fine dining, until Tuesday.

Dale Agar, managing director of Southampton in the Sky, said: “It is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be able to eat 100 foot in the sky in an open air restaurant.

“We want people to enjoy what is a memorable experience.”

Among the restaurants taking part is renowned Chewton Glen Hotel from New Milton, with Southampton ice cream chain Sprinkles Gelato also offering people the chance to enjoy their favourite flavour over the city.

Ibrahim Ahmed, operations director at Sprinkles Gelato said: “We’re very excited to be part of this amazing opportunity to do something different in the city we love.

“Southampton is the home of Sprinkles and it’s fantastic that something so innovative is going to be hosted here.

“We love doing new things and breaking the mould of what’s expected from a dessert parlour. We can’t wait to serve up some amazing treats in the sky!”

With offerings including breakfast sittings, lunch, an evening meal and cocktails on top of an ice-cream trip, 22 guests will be strapped in and a crane will then raise the entire floating restaurant off the ground.

Guests will then spend either half an hour or longer at the height depending on the selected experience.

Joining Sprinkles and Chewton Glen will be Tapas Barcelona, Beresfords, the Jetty at Southampton Harbour Hotel, Supermarine at Centenary Quay Waterfront, Kuti’s Brasserie, Captain’s Club Hotel and Mettricks.

Tickets for the flights start at £50 per person.
