HUNDREDS of budding Formula One stars took to the grid in the Bishop’s Waltham Scouts’ Kart Grand Prix – all eager to achieve a podium finish.

There was no help from turbocharged Ferrari engines or the like when, on June 4, 1983, more than 250 youngsters used their muscle power to compete.

Cubs and Scouts from Bishop’s Waltham, Shedfield and Swanmore took part in the event.

Later, there was a camp fire followed by a few surprise “investitures” by the district commissioner.
