A HAMPSHIRE city is set to get a new craft ale bar complete with street food.

Amrik Rai, along with his partner Teresa Zammit and son Mikha, opened Overdraft on Shirley Road, Southampton back in December 2015.

Now, they will open a branch on Jewry Street in Winchester, formally Ruby Reds Burger Shack, and are in the process of renovating the space.

Overdraft Winchester will offer a rotating selection of around 30 local, national and international craft beers, real ales poured straight from the cask into the glass and rustic ciders, plus a small range of locally sourced botanic spirits, mixers and organic soft drinks.

The food offering will be a wide selection of tacos filled with locally sourced meat, seafood and vegetarian fillings accompanied by locally sourced salads, refried haricot beans, local cheeses, guacamole and soured cream.

Amrik, a former music journalist for the New Musical Express in the 1980s and manager of cult proto-techno group Caberet Voltaire, said: “We are quite excited about it. We are not a micro-pub, we will have street food, music and events as well as 38 different beers. The atmosphere is different to pubs - At the pub in Shirley around 40 per cent of the customers are women.

“The family have invested £200,000 and have a rolling lease for as long as we pay the rent.

“The reason I opened Overdraft is that my missus kept saying why are you sitting around at home drinking craft ale from Havana or Brooklyn?

“The beer is really nice and you can't get it anywhere else; she said ‘why don’t you open somewhere and serve it?’

Mr Rai added that the target opening date for the Winchester branch is September 30, with trial runs taking place in the lead-up to the opening.

“We will not open until we are satisfied that the food and ale offerings are in perfect condition, so the opening date may go back by a few days if we feel that everything is not up to scratch,” he said.
