THE tree-felling in the Cathedral Close has finished opening up the footpath.

The number of lime trees has been reduced from 28 to 14 to allow the remaining trees more room to grow and thrive.

Without the work the trees would have become diseased and have to be cut down.

The work was done by Wessex Tree Surgeons led by Gary Snellgrove who cut down the old trees in 1985.

The walk is not far airier than when there were 28 trees shading out the sunlight and views of the cathedral.

The wood from the chopped trees will be transformed into St Swithun’s eggs and wooden crosses.
