Woolston Works were first documented as fielding football teams from as early as 1884.

In 1887, the club won the first Hampshire Senior Cup Final, emerging triumphant after a 2-0 win against Winchester.

The season was, however, shrouded in controversy as one of the Woolston Works players, J. Kesson, moved back to Glasgow during the season. Andover were beaten in an earlier round featuring Kesson, and they claimed he should be disqualified.

Woolston argued that Kesson had left clothing at his lodgings in Woolston, and therefore intended to return. The FA upheld the appeal and granted Kesson the right to play

After the First World War, the club reformed as Thornycrofts.

In 1920 Thornycrofts reached the FA Cup first round proper, taking on first Division Burnley at The Dell, holding them off to a 0-0 draw before losing 5-0 in the replay.

In 1960 the club reformed after eight years of inactivity – becoming Vosper Thornycroft FC.

The club changed their name to VT FC in 2002, before changing again in 2010 – this time to Sholing FC.

During the 2013/14 season, the club won the FA Vase Cup – achieving what may be the greatest honour in the club’s history.
