A WOMAN had to be cut free from her car and rushed to hospital after a crash in Southampton.

Emergency services rushed to Northam Road yesterday morning after a Mercedes and a Peugeot crashed.

The woman in the Peugeot became stuck, with 16 firefighters from Redbridge and St Mary’s attending to help cut the top off the car and free her.

The crash, which happened shortly before 11am, also saw parts of roads closed and traffic build in the city centre.

Police shut off sections of Northam Road and Union Road to deal with the incident, which saw the woman rushed to hospital after suffering back pain.

A spokesperson from Hampshire Fire and Rescue said: “We were called to Northam Road at 10.51am to a two-car collision on the junction with Union Road.

“One casualty was trapped with care provided until the arrival of South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS). The stop message came at 12.39pm.”

Police also attended to help manage the scene and the traffic after the accident partially blocked the roads and Northam Bridge.

A statement from SCAS said: “We were called at 10.47am to the junction of the A3024.

“One person involved, a female, was complaining of suffering back pain following the accident.

“We sent an ambulance to the scene and she was taken to University Hospital Southampton.”
