A TEAM of Hampshire students are celebrating a year of hard work after their restaurant was named in the top three across the country.

Fareham College Hospitality and Catering students attended the AA Hospitality Awards dinner as finalists for Avenue 141.

The student-led restaurant had been named as a finalist for College Restaurant of the Year 2017.

The students have been involved in a number of projects throughout the year which led them to the finals in London.

After creating a video to showcase their potential, they were shortlisted to the final 16 colleges and attended a judging day where industry experts put candidates to the test before cutting the list to the final three.

Ben Smith, a level two professional cookery student said: “We had such a great time competing.

“Attending the awards dinner in London was a really exciting opportunity. Now I’m looking forward to continuing on to level three while learning at one of the best college restaurants in the country.”

The AA College Rosette Scheme is designed to recognise the efforts of students in roles both in front and back of house.

The annual awards night is attended by world-renowned chefs, hoteliers and restaurateurs, with the award itself being won by South Cheshire College.

Avenue 141 is run by the Hospitality and Catering students to gain experience during their studies.

Restaurant manager Holly Stephenson said: “I am extremely proud of all the hard work that our students have put into getting us to the final.

“They have set a high bench mark for our new students who have joined us this year.

“We had such a wonderful evening, with fabulous food and great company. We look forward to next year’s competition.”

Commercial manager Sammy Eastwood said: “It is fantastic to see the college being recognised for the high standard of food and customer service on offer in our silver service restaurant and we are very proud to be able to say we made it to the final.”

The annual awards, attended by world renowned chefs, saw former AA Chef of the Year, Simon Rogan and celebrity entertainment from former Great British Bake Off host Mel Giedroyc as well as chef Tom Kerridge.

The ceremony provides recognition of excellence in all areas of hospitality, including individuals and restaurants run by students and staff.
