SAFETY probes are to be launched in more Southampton tower blocks after fire fears.

Additional surveys into safety measures are to begin in Redbridge Towers and Millbrook Towers later this month.

It comes after housing bosses announced an investigation into Canberra Towers after an investigation found the fire doors to be “completely inadequate” after they were found to be open half the time on windy days.

Now, Southampton City Council have announced that following the probe at Canberra Towers in Weston that starts next Monday, Redbridge Towers and Millbrook Towers will follow before the end of October.

A statement from the authority said: “Our latest programme of independent fire inspection surveys across all of our tower blocks started in August.

“Surveys at Canberra Towers start on Monday, October 9, and residents will be notified by letter that inspectors may require access to their flats.

“Similar surveys at Redbridge Towers and Millbrook Towers will follow later this month.”

Cabinet member for housing and adult care, cllr Warwick Payne, said that the frequency of regular safety checks carried out at the tower blocks need to be reviewed.

Cllr Payne said: “Whenever anything is pointed out, of course it is reported to be looked at.

“We carry out our regular safety checks on the buildings, and perhaps we need to look at how often we carry those out if some safety features are faulty.

“We are putting sprinklers in place and upgrading the blocks to ensure they are safe, but as I said, whenever something comes up, we will look at how to put it right.”

Redbridge Towers saw a 12th-floor-flat catch alight, gutting the inside in April this year, two months before London’s Grenfell Tower blaze saw around 80 people killed.

The authority has said sprinklers will be installed at all high-rises, making the council the third district to take such measures.

Ron Trivett, 60, lives next door to the flat that caught fire in Redbridge Towers, and welcomed the checks by the council.

Ron said: “Of course it’s a good thing that they want us to feel safe.

“I think the procedures in case of a fire need to be looked at, but it’s great that the council is taking steps to address any issues.

“The fire in April was a bit of a wake-up call, I’m amazed that nothing has been done.”
