A COUPLE born and bred in the Southampton area celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary yesterday.

Don and Pat Simmonds, who live in West End, have spent their lives together in the city, marrying on October 5, 1957, at St Mary’s Church, before renewing their vows at the same venue in 2006.

Don, 80, spent his time as a merchant seaman, working as a first-class waiter on the Queen Elizabeth when they met at Bedford Place’s Candlelight Club. He spent ten years at sea and then 28 years at Southampton docks before moving to British American Tobacco. Pat worked in a shoe shop before moving around retail stores and working for Chloride Standby Systems in Northam.

With their daughter, Donna, they will celebrate with family and friends.

The couple also have two grandsons.
