Two people escaped unhurt after their car burst into flames in Southampton at height of the morning rush-hour.

Paul Maduna and a colleague were driving from Southampton to Totton when their Vito people carrier caught fire yesterday.

They pulled over, blocking one of the lanes at the junction of Millbrook Road West and Millbrook Point Road.

Mr Maduna, 37, who works for Echor Health Care, said: "I was driving along Millbrook Road West when the engine started to cut out.

"I pulled over and opened the bonnet and realised that the engine had caught fire.

"It wasn't much at first but a short time later it was huge."

Hampshire Fire Rescue Service was called to the scene and extinguished the blaze, which destroyed the engine and badly damaged the windscreen.
