THE law courts in Winchester will throw open their doors to the public for the first time for a behind-the-scenes look at how justice is served in the county.

Visitors will be able to visit cells, see inside a prison van, watch a mock trial and even try on a judge’s robes and wig at its Criminal Justice Open Day on Saturday.

The day will include mock trials, along with the opportunity to sit in the judge’s chair and have your fingerprints taken.

The emergency services will also be stopping by for people of all ages to check out inside their vehicles.

Along with a bouncy castle and face-painting, there will be a raffle raising money for the Winchester Citizen’s Advice Bureau for their witness service.

Judge Keith Cutler, recorder of Winchester, said: “Courts are public places and we invite those who are curious and keen to see a real court in action.

“We welcome everybody to come and visit and to find out more about us and what happens here,” added Winchester’s senior judge.

The event is supported by Michael Lane, police and crime commissioner, and his team will be there to show how the commissioner is helping to reduce offending and increase safety across the district.

His Youth Commission and the Independent Custody Visitors will also be there, sharing information on how you can get involved and make a difference in your community.

The Criminal Justice Open Day will run from 10am to 3pm at the courts at the top of the High Street.
