IT IS the Hampshire pub with a “unique” attraction.

The Brigadier Gerard on Botley Road, Horton Heath, is said to attract dozens of residents every week not just for its traditional food but also for a popular display of flowers.

Landlord Paul Bats and his wife Glynis said they wanted to bring character to the pub when they took it over five years ago and thought flowers were perfect.

Now the 36 baskets of flowers, which include a selection of roses and dallies, are part and parcel of the pub.

Paul, 67, from Horton Heat, said: “The amount of people who stop here just to see the flowers is incredible. Flowers make the pub very unique and our customers love them.”

Paul and Glynis, who is also from Horton Heath, believe that a pub has to offer residents as much as possible, including high quality food, a wide selection of drinks but also a friendly and relaxing atmosphere.

Paul said they buy all the ingredients from local suppliers to support local businesses and to guarantee fresh food every day. The menu offers a wide selection of traditional food with the home-made fish pie being the best-seller while the youngsters prefer fish fingers and pizza. Customers can also choose to have vegan or vegetarian meals and enjoy a wide selection of drinks which includes ales, lagers, wine and spirits.

Several events are also run at the pub throughout the week including a quiz night every Wednesday and themed events organised from time to time. But Paul said the pub does not host live bands.

He added: “Food and live music do not mix at all here. "Our clients come here because they like the atmosphere, they want to relax, dine, have a drink and having live music would be too much.”

The garden is also one of the main attraction, along with an area just for smokers where they can enjoy a cigarette and watch TV.
