THOUSANDS of people across Hampshire are set to head to Hindu and Sikh temples today to celebrate the Festival of Light.

Knows as Diwali, the event will see fireworks blasting off across Southampton when communities come together to celebrate one of the biggest religious festivals.

They will be joining millions of people and those who are not from Hindu and Sikh backgrounds, to celebrate the New Year.

Today (October 19), is known as Amavasya, the new moon day.

People from across the city are set to head to the Vedic Society Hindu Temple on Radcliffe Road, Northam, or to the city's Sikh Gurdwaras to enjoy fireworks displays that will litter the night sky.

It sees people celebrate and honour the goddess Lakshmi and hope for spiritual and material wealth and prosperity for the coming year.

Southampton City Council's cabinet for communities, culture and leisure, Satvir Kaur, said the festival was important for the city because it sees people from different backgrounds come together as one.

Cllr Kaur said: "We have a very diverse community and we need to celebrate that in Southampton. Diwali has been celebrated ever since I was born in the city and it's been great to watch the festival grow.

"What is so fantastic is how different religions come together and show solidarity. I do believe that Southampton is a place where everyone comes together and where hope overcomes fear.

"I would encourage everyone to light a candle and enjoy the Festival of Light."

A firework display is to be held at the Vedic Society from 7.30pm tonight, and President of the society, Ravindra Parmar said it was 'wonderful' to be able to welcome the different communities together.

He said: "It's all about wishing people peace and goodwill and it is wonderful that we can welcome different people together to celebrate.

"We want to wish peace to everyone as well as our loved ones and bring the community together."

Parts of Radcliffe Road and Union Road are also set to be closed due to the number of people expected in the area at the time.
