CAMPAIGNERS attempting to save a historic clock in Ringwood town centre are “over the moon” after a “common sense” decision was reached over restoration works.

Amended plans to renovate the face and hands, and electrify the timepiece, at Friday’s Cross in Ringwood were unanimously approved by New Forest District Council’s planning committee on Wednesday.

While a timeframe over when the clock will be back in working order is yet to be finalised, the approval marks the end of a year-long bid to return the clock to its prime.

Applicant and lead campaigner Chris Wood said it was fantastic news that the scheme had been approved. “I’m absolutely over the moon with the outcome,”

Mr Wood said.

“It’s really pleasing that after a long process common sense has prevailed in the end.

“All being well I would think the work will be carried out in spring next year.”

The bid to repair the clock has been supported by Ringwood Town Council, who gave a grant aid cheque of £1,000 to the development.

Ringwood town councillor Philip Day has worked closely with Mr Wood to get the plans approved.

“I’m delighted we have got the result we wanted and could come to an agreement with the planning committee,”

Cllr Day said.

“The town has come together on this and now we will have to sit down and work out the details for carrying out the work.”

Initial plans went before members in July, but were deferred by the committee with a request to further consider the available options. Members of the planning committee sided with this recommendation, giving the green light for the restoration to be carried out.

Ringwood north ward district councillor Michael Thierry, who is on the planning committee, said: “It will be a grand day for Ringwood when the clock begins to tell the time again.”
