HAVING travelled for over two hours in order to visit Winchester Cathedral, I was astonished when leaving the A34 that there were no signs whatsoever giving directions to the building.

If you go to St David’s Cathedral, there is directional signage in a 15-mile radius of the cathedral, likewise with Llandaff Cathedral, Canterbury Cathedral, Wells Cathedral, etc, so surely the Winchester City Council could find the time to erect signage for a very important cathedral for visitors to find their way around the city.

It was with luck that I found parking spaces for one hour by the Guild Hall, but not one of those spaces had been allocated for disabled usage and the car parks I passed did not indicate how close they were to the cathedral or that there were spaces for the disabled.

Is it the case that Winchester City Council does not wish to have disabled people visit and that is why there are no parking spaces available for them?

We had to struggle to the Guild Hall to find out where the cathedral was and enquire as to disabled parking. The first we were given directions to but the second question they could not give an answer.

In the end all was in vain as the cathedral was closed for the presentation of university degrees.

Lovely city, pity that the council has very little thought for the visitors who come.
