SOUTHAMPTON has been put on flood alert as the UK prepares to be battered by Storm Brian.

Flood warnings have been issued for communities in the Test estuary and all along the southern part of the River Itchen.

Areas such as Northam and Portswood are being warned of potential flooding, while extra flood defences could be drafted into St Denys, according to the Environment Agency.

St Marys, where Saints prepare to take on West Brom in the Premier League tonight, is also included in the flood warning zone, as are Netley, Hamble and Botley.

On the western part of the city, alerts have been issued for the Totton and Redbridge areas.

Warnings have also been issued in the New Forest for coastal area such as Lymington and Milford-on-Sea, as well as along the Beaulieu River.

A spokesperson for the Environment Agency, said: "On Saturday, Storm Brian brings strong winds, large waves and water levels higher than a normal high spring tide.

"The tide may impact the boat yards around Bursledon and may come close to the floor level at Eling Tide Mill.

"Property protection could be installed at St Denys as a precautionary measure.

"Water levels in the lower River Itchen will increase around the time of high water.

"Property flooding is not expected but the defence gates around the White Swan Pub should be closed.

"Southampton City Council will install the temporary flood barrier to help protect the car park and car garage at this location. 

"This Flood Alert will be removed around 4pm when coastal conditions will have returned to normal."
