It was Millbrook’s second match of the season, scoring 50 points in each of their opening matches.

Despite finishing 50-6 on September 27, 1997, the scoreline was said to have slightly flattered Eastleigh, with Millbrook scoring four tries inside the first quarter.

A report in the Daily Echo read: “To be fair to Eastleigh, they stuck with it, with Toby Maher leading by example, Joe Buttle making some surging runs and scrum half, Stefan Nicholls, sniping away behind a well-beaten pack. Those efforts were rewarded with two long-range penalties from Jim Longhurst.

“Richard Goodridge and Darren Renwick shone in a Millbrook pack that deservedly scored the first two tries. The half backs revelled in the time and space they were given, Rob Prowling scoring one and Wayne Renwick two tries.

“The ubiquitous Gordon Randall popped up for two late ones, while Zane D’Monte gave a superb kicking display, landing six of seven conversion attempts and a penalty.”
