Southampton City Council will set differences aside for a friendly sports match.

Councillors from all parties have been invited to swap debate for dodgeball when they take each other on in a local park.

It follows 2016's game of rounders in Palmerston Park, when opposing sides took each other on in a friendly match.

But this year leisure and communities boss Councillor Satvir Kaur said she hopes to set the record straight after Labour lost last year's rounders match to the hard-hitting Tories by 2-5 to 5.

But Tory leader Jeremy Moulton sounded confident and said his team "would destroy" Labour - even though he himself has never played the game.

Now the Lib Dems have said they will are keen to take part - but only if they can set up their own team instead of siding with Labour or Conservatives, as councillors were asked to do last year.

Southampton Independents Councillor Andrew Pope said: "That's typical. It's always Labour versus Conservatives. But now is not the time to be playing silly games".

He added: "If Cllr Kaur wants to play silly games she can do that herself. I don't think the people of Southampton will look kindly on it".

Dodgeball involves players throwing balls at each other whilst avoiding being hit themselves.

The 2004 film Dodgeball starred Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn who fight it out to win control of a local gym in financial difficulties.

The councillors will face off on December 2.
