FINGER-LICKIN' fast food outlet KFC is set to trial its fries of the future in Southampton.

The city is one of 10 lucky locations tasked with testing out the thick-cut, skin on chips, which go on the menu at the chicken chains' Westquay restaurant today.

But KFC fans will have to wing it over to the fast food outlet fast if they want to the try the rustic French fries, which are only available until the end of December.

If the chips are a success, KFC will roll them out in stores across the country.

Jack Hinchliffe, innovation director at KFC UK and Ireland, said: “Our fans have told us that while we’re always their number one choice for chicken, we’re not yet their number one for fries.

"Launching this trial has been no small undertaking – we’ve tested every type of potato and cut to find the perfect variety to deliver the best tasting fry.

"With 900 restaurants there’s a lot to consider – but the most important factor for us is taste.

"We want our customers to tell us what they think and only if you like them will they hit the menu permanently.”

Southampton is one of 10 locations across the UK to an early eye on the fries as part of the six week trial.

Other locations include Portsmouth, Heathrow Airport and Manchester.

The American chain first came to Britain in 1965 and now has more than 890 stores.

It sells an estimated 14 million pieces of its chicken a week, approximately 700 million pieces a year.
