A HAMPSHIRE pub has won a national award for the quality and standards of it toilets.

The Loo of the Year Awards 2017 have awarded The Old Gaolhouse in Jewry Street in Winchester a platinum star rating – the highest award given by the organisers of the competition.

Awards organisers say the platinum rating is only given to establishments with “exceptional toilets”.

Hannah Barret, manager of The Old Gaolhouse, said: “We are delighted with the award.

“Staff at the pub ensure the toilets are in first-class condition at all time and it is great that this has been recognised by the inspectors.”

Loo of the Year Awards inspectors visit thousands of toilets unannounced to judge the washroom standards across the UK.

The awards are celebrating their 30th anniversary this year with aims to improve ‘away from home’ toilet standards.

The toilets are judged against strict criteria which assesses the décor and maintenance as well as the equipment and overall management of the facilities.

The Loo of the Year Awards 2017 managing director, Mike Bone, added: “The toilets at The Old Gaolhouse have been designed and fitted out to a very high standard and are both clean and well maintained.

“The pub richly deserves its platinum award – the highest individual award the judges can deliver.”
