Southampton City have secured back-to-back wins in the National Premier League.

Sponsored by Hunters Estate Agents, the NPL is a doubles competition made up of regional pools, the winners of which qualify for the next round along with the best runners-up.

Southampton are one of eight teams in the south-west section and have won their first two matches against Millfield and Stoke Park.

Jake Norris, from Hedge End, and Liam Hignett, from Basingstoke, won both their doubles matches as Southampton won their opener against Millfield at David Lloyd, Southampton.

Sam Bossem and Mike Johnson lost their two matches but won a set, which proved the difference as Southampton took the points.

Captain Paul Scullard came into the team for the second match away to Stoke Park in Newport, Wales on Saturday.

He and Mats Colling, from Chandlers Ford, lost their first match to the hosts’ number one pair, 6-3, 7-5, before winning their second match 6-0, 6-1.

Southampton’s number one pair, Norris and Hignett, continued their unbeaten start to the competition by winning their matches 6-3, 6-4 and 6-0, 6-4.

He said: “It was a close contest against Millfield, who look like the team to beat.

“I’d no idea about the standard coming into the competition but we seem to be one of the strongest teams.

“Having said that it was disappointing not to win all our matches against Stoke Park as Millfield won by a bigger margin than us and are now in pole position in our group.”

Piers Farhang, the team’s best player, is currently injured. Josh Gook is another member of the squad yet to feature.

Spectators are welcome at all Southampton City’s home matches.The next fixture is against Taunton at David Lloyd, Southampton on Sunday, December 10 (2pm).
