HUNDREDS of people flocked to a Christmas lights display in a Hampshire town.

1,000 people turned out to see Meridian TV weather presenter Holly Green and Undateables star, Shaine Singer switch on the Byron Road Christmas lights in New Milton at 6pm last night with former Saints, Spurs and Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp also making an appearance.

The street has been filmed by crews from Australian, US, French and Russian TV, as well as appearing in part of the Cadbury's Christmas advert last year.

The money raised from the event will go to the Fortune Centre of Riding Therapy at Bransgore and One Community.

Organiser Ged Hollyoake said: "It was a brilliant event with a superb turnout, one of the best turnout.

"Everyone got supplied with mulled wine, hot chocolate and other refreshments.

"We had entertainment from 4pm and the big switch-on at 6pm, as well as a visit from Santa.

"Apart from all the fun and the look on everyone's faces, the charities are the reason we do it.

"It was also a surprise to have a number of A list celebrities there as well."

The lights stay on until January 2 with spontaneous appearances expected from Santa Claus and his elves.
