PLANS to redevelop an aircraft factory site in a Hampshire village for housing have been unveiled.

GE Aviation in Hamble could undergo a major revamp and plans have been unveiled to demolish some of the buildings and create 147 new homes on the nearby land, as well upgrade existing sports pitches.

According to the proposals, a mix of one, two, three and four-bedroom homes could be created along with 308 parking spaces, open spaces and a new play area.

The football pitch on site could receive new changing facilities and a spectator stand while the cricket pitch could be relocated to the nearby Underdown Pavilion.

Meanwhile, the bowls green and listed buildings on site would be retained and refurbished.

As part of the project a new access road could be provided into the site off Hamble Lane.

GE Aviation said the facility has suffered economic challenges over the last five years despite significant investment.

If the plans are approved some of the staff could be relocated to a new logistic hub in the region while others will continue to work at the remaining scaled down plant in Hamble.

A GE spokesperson said: “We are currently looking at opportunities to consolidate our site footprint and associated costs in order to remain competitive in the current aviation market. We are holding constructive meetings with the sports club’s representatives and are working closely with the council to identify the viability of various options.”

But Keith House, leader oft Eastleigh Borough Council, said: “ The council has made clear to GE Aviation that it does not need new housing sites in Hamble and that there can be no net loss of sports facilities in the area. The plans being developed by the company do not appear to reflect the Council’s planning policies and we would urge a rethink.”

GE Aviation held public consultations in Hamble on November 30 and December 2.
