A MAN found guilty of the savage murder of a student after they spent a day drinking and taking drugs together has been jailed for life.

Andi Edwards, 37, has denied murdering hairdresser Alex Woods, 22, at the defendant's home.

A jury at Winchester Crown Court found Edwards guilty of murder and he was sentenced at the same court to a minimum term of 17 years, 208 days before he will be considered for parole.

The court previously heard Mr Woods was stabbed a number of times in the back and died after knocking on a neighbour's door while covered in blood.

Shocked onlookers described "crazy scenes" as police shot a dog and arrested two people on suspicion of murder.

Earlier in the trial, the court had heard that Edwards slashed at Woods in a "fit of rage".

The pair had been spotted on CCTV in Eastleigh High Street on July 6, the morning of the attack.

The jury was told that Edwards was seen buying cider from an off licence before neighbours saw them talking in a friendly manner.

But just 12 hours, Mr Woods was knocked on neighbour Sarah Heath's door, begging for help.

She told the court she saw a silhouette of a man holding a kitchen knife and closed the door before shouting to tell her husband to call police.

Police arrived and found Mr Woods slumped against a wall covered in blood.

Officers then followed a trail of blood from the victim back to Edwards' house and inside discovered blood spattered across windows, kitchen appliances, and the floor.

They then shot dead an aggressive German Shepherd named Benson, who was in the home and "agitated" after the attack.

Edwards, of Scott Road, Eastleigh, admitted stabbing Mr Woods but claimed that he acted in self defence.
