A FIRE broke out in a Winchester kitchen, forcing residents to flee the property in the early hours of the morning.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue raced to the blaze in Greenhill Close at around 12.20am.

Once on the scene, they found the fire - which started in the home’s dishwasher before spreading to the washing machine.

All residents in the home were awoken by the fire alarm, and everyone managed to get out of the house safely.

Winchester fire station used two sets of breathing apparatus, one high pressure hose reel and tactical ventilation to control and extinguish the fire.

The crew left the scene at around 2.30am.

A spokesperson for the station said: “The fact this family had a working smoke alarm gave them an early warning and woke up the occupants, meaning they left the house safely.

“One gentleman in the home closed the door where the fire started which stopped it spreading to the rest of the house.”
