BASINGSTOKE primary school table tennis teams from St Mary’s Church of England Junior School and St John’s Church of England Primary School enjoyed a county double Having won the Basingstoke schools team table tennis competitions in October, the Under-11 girls team from St Mary’s, and the Under-11 boys team from St John’s, made their way to Testwood School in Totton to compete in the County Finals.

Both did stunningly well winning their respective competitions.

The St Mary’s team made up of Shriya Vithlani, Kaya Patel, Sophie Day and Lucy Throssell, won both of their group games against Spring Hill from Southampton and Fair Oak from Eastleigh by a comprehensive 8-0 score line.

This meant they came up against Abbotswood from the New Forest in the final, which they won by a score of 6-2.

The St John’s quartet of Esat Polat, Harry Rushbrook, Daniel Ward and Nathan Sanday, also won both of their group games 8-0 without even losing a set on the way. They also beat Spring Hill from Southampton as well as Droxford Junior School.

Their final against St Bede’s from Winchester was a much closer affair, but St John’s ended up coming out on top 5-3.

They have both now qualified for the zone final of this National competition. This will take place at Morpeth School in Tower Hamlets on Saturday January 13.
