GRITTERS are set to head out on Hampshire's roads tonight as temperatures plunge.

The Met Office says the needle will plunge to 3C in Southampton and 2C in Winchester overnight, with clear skies and occasional clouds forecast.

A forecast for the region says: "Frost is likely in many places with largely clear skies and winds falling light.

"Cloud will increase and thicken with rain spreading eastwards later in the night.

"Minimum temperature -1C."

Hampshire County Council's highways team confirmed that gritters were being sent out on the county's roads.

A statement says: "Our gritters are currently out on both the north and central priority one routes and will be out salting southern priority one routes at 6pm."
