SECONDARY school league tables, featuring the results of new, tougher GCSEs in English and maths, have been published today.

Just one Southampton school fell below the government's floor standard  of -0.5 for indicator, Progress 8 – which monitors a pupil's progress made in eight subjects between the end of primary school and GCSEs.

That was Woodlands Community College, in Harefield, which had a score of -0.85.

In Hampshire, Crestwood Community School, Eastleigh, finished just below the floor standard, with a score of -0.52.

Both schools were both rated 'Well Below Average' by the Department for Education on their Progress 8 score.

At the other end of the scale, girl's-only-school, St Anne's, topped the table with a 'Well Above Average' score of +0.63.

It was closely followed by St George School in Swaythling, while Regents Park Community College was also rated 'Well Above Average'.

In Hampshire, academies, Wildern School, in Hedge End, Thornden School, in Chandler's Ford, Hounsdown, in Totton, and The Mountbatten School, in Romsey, all performed above average.

City council-maintained schools Cantell, Bitterne Park and Redbridge Community School all performed above the government's floor standard for Progress 8.

Both Oasis Academies, Lord's Hill and Mayfield, as well as academy Upper Shirley High, all made the grade with 'Average' Progress 8 scores.

Head teacher at Cantell, Harry Kutty, said: "Despite the significant changes to the secondary curriculum and the way youngsters are examined and graded, I continue to be extremely proud of the achievements of our city.

"The league tables published today confirm that Cantell continues to be one of the best performing schools across Southampton and Hampshire.

"We will continue to focus on being the best we can for this city."

Progress 8 takes into account the educational level at which pupils entered the school and the results of a pupil's best eight GCSE results.

Of those eight, two must be English and maths, which this time were made tougher and graded 9 to 1, instead of the traditional alphabetical system.

All other GCSEs are graded under the old-style alphabetical system.
