A SOUTHAMPTON branch of a celebrity chef’s restaurant chain will not be opening, it has been confirmed.

As reported signs on Westquay’s last remaining empty unit have promised that Jamie’s Italian will be “opening soon” for around a year.

But now a spokesperson for the company has confirmed the ‘naked chef’ will not be bringing his brand to the city.

A statement released to the Echo said: “The Southampton site will not be opening.

“We are pleased to have received the overwhelming support from our creditors for our proposal to reshape Jamie’s Italian restaurants. We have a strong brand and are focused on continuing to deliver the levels of service, taste and the experience our loyal customers deserve.

“We are working hard to ensure that our estate is fit for the current trading environment and we feel confident that this newly shaped business will provide strong opportunities for growth and profitability.”

As reported the company is closing 12 of its 37 UK restaurants, with job losses of around 200 around the country.

Jamie Oliver is reported to be worth around £240m.

His Winchester restaurant closed in 2014.

Westquay declined to comment on the announcement or on any potential plans for the unit.
