This weekend sees a series of free events to celebrate the opening of new theatre venue Studio 144, comprising of Nuffield Southampton Theatre, City Eye and John Hansard Gallery. From dance performances, poetry workshops to music sessions. Suitable for all ages, today opens with dance performances from ZoieLogic Dance Theatre and ending with a spectacular firework display in the evening at The Guildhall Square. Tomorrow, between 11am and 3.30pm, The Star Seekers will be hosting an action-packed day of games, songs and crafts that are out-of-this-world! Suitable for under 6’s. The Winchester Science Centre hosts Movies in the Planetarium on Sunday morning and will screen the hilarious film, Flubber. Starring Robin Williams, the film follows Professor Philip Brainard discovery of a rubber substance called Flubber that comes alive. However, he becomes so distracted by his new discovery that he misses his own wedding to Sara and is dumped immediately! Afterwards, you could book to watch The Secret World of Gases show which includes demonstrations using nitrogen and hydrogen. The Actors’ Co-operative Theatre of Southampton presents their annual pantomime with an adaptation of Aladdin tomorrow at the Freemantle United Reformed Church. The play will follow the traditional story of Aladdin’s and Jasmine’s turbulent relationship with frequent disruptions from Jafar and the Genie but with new and modern twists. Promising to be their most lavish pantomime yet, it is recommended that you pre-book to avoid any disappointment as there are limited tickets available at the door. With its medieval architecture and romantic gardens, The Domus at Beaulieu is the perfect, evening setting tonight for the screening of Beauty and the Beast. This is Night Star Cinema’s debut Pop Up Cinema event which they will be playing Walt Disney’s 2017 remake of Beauty and the Beast starring Emma Watson as Belle and Dan Stevens as the Beast. After being rescued by the Beast from a pack of wolves, the story follows young Belle’s blossoming romance with the Beast. Celebrate the Year of the Dog at West Quay shopping centre on Sunday where there will be events throughout the day such as dance and martial arts performances including the traditional dragon dance. Organised by The Chinese Association of Southampton, there will be workshops for the little ones from lantern-making, paper cutting, calligraphy to dressing up in traditional Chinese costumes. This Chinese New Year is a particularly lucky one with the dog symbolising fortune, health and luck so make sure you spend it with your family and friends.
