A DRINK driver who killed a pony and trap rider just 12 days after being sentenced for driving carelessly along the same stretch of road has been jailed.

Oliver Wareham, having sunk six-and-a-half pints of lager, two shots of Jägermeister and a Jack Daniels, struck William Gaskin as he rode down Portsmouth Road, Bursledon.

The fatal crash came less than two weeks after he admitted driving into and damaging a number of road traffic signs on the same road.

Mr Gaskin, 33, was killed by Wareham after his VW Bora Index crashed into him at around 11.30pm on the night of March 26, 2017.

The pony was put down after the incident, and the trap toppled over the top of Wareham's car in the collision.

Southampton Crown Court heard that just one minute after the crash Wareham called his brother to pick him up as opposed to help at the scene where Mr Gaskin was in desperate need of medical attention.

In leaving the incident, police were unable to carry out a breath test on him but after experts collected CCTV footage from The Cricketers, on Portsmouth Road, they were able to make an approximate reading.

This reading estimated he had 95mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood, where the limit is 80.

Wareham, 29, was sentenced to four years and four months imprisonment following his hearing this afternoon.

Wareham, of Rownhams Road, Southampton, was disqualified from driving for five years and will have to carry out an extended retest if he is to drive again.
