A MAN was left abandoned in a life threatening condition after the moped he was a passenger on smashed into a barrier.

Hampshire Constabulary are appealing for witnesses after a moped with a rider and passenger reportedly collided with a barrier in St Mary's Road, Netley Abbey, at around 3.45pm on Friday (February 16).

A 20-year-old man is currently at Southampton General Hospital with life threatening injuries.

Police initially said they were trying to trace a second person, who was reported to have left the scene on the moped following the collision.

Investigations into the exact circumstances of the collision are ongoing and anyone with information about what happened or who witnessed it are urged to come forward.

A 16-year-old boy, from Southampton, has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and aggravated vehicle taking.

He remains in custody at this time.
