A NEW study has found that Southampton pet owners believe their pets are capable of helping them navigate challenges throughout their lives.

Almost two-thirds quizzed say their animal has helped them through a difficult period.

Owning a pet has long been cited as being good for your health, with various studies showing that pets can reduce cardiovascular risk for owners, and even help people live longer.

New research by animal retail chain Pets at Home has found that pets can help people through a variety of challenges.

According to the study, 60 per cent of Southampton’s pet owners claim their pet has helped them through a difficult period in their life, and 52 per cent say their pet has helped to combat their loneliness.

The research was carried out with insurance provider Petplan.

More than half also say that having a pet has benefitted their mental health.

Jonny Armstrong, of Pets at Home, said: “There are numerous proven physical health benefits of owning a pet, such as lowered blood pressure and cholesterol, but just as significant are the effects on wellbeing and mental health – whether that’s grief, loneliness or depression.

“Unfortunately, our pets too can suffer from illnesses and injuries, just like their owners. Keeping pets and owners together for as long as possible is something that we strive for, so together they can live long and happy lives without the worry of treatment costs, should their pet get ill or get injured.

“Our aim is to ensure that owners are educated on the importance of pet insurance – so owners and their pets can do what is most important – enjoying time together and support one another through difficult times.”

When questioned on health and fitness, 32 per cent of the city’s owners say their pet has helped them to feel better while they were ill, and 16 per cent attribute their pet as a way of keeping fit.

More than one-third also added that their animal has helped them with a bereavement, and 27 per cent praised their pet for assisting them in getting over the end of a relationship. There are more than 440 Pets at Home stores across the UK, with various outlets in Hampshire, including Shirley.
