SOUTHAMPTON based charity, UK Shaolin Temple, opened its doors to the public to be part of its Chinese New Year Celebrations to welcome in the Year of the Dog.

The Sheriff of Southampton officially opened the colourful and lively celebrations in Shirley.

The event this year saw an unprecedented number of visitors.

The Year of the Dog is considered to be a lucky one in all respects.

The Dog is said to characterise action, so many believe that this year people will actively pursue their ambitions and dreams.

Shi Yan Min, founder of UK Shaolin Temple and a 34th Generation Shaolin Warrior Monk, said, “We had much to celebrate this year as we have many new members, particularly for Tai Chi and Meditation, and have recently launched a Tea Club which brings the enjoyment of tea and meditation together.

"It’s also great to see that many more children are joining our classes.”

This year the charity’s main focus will be to find a new home as they have now outgrown their current premises since they moved there two years ago.

Shi Yan Min added: “People come to us for different reasons and our expanding programme and initiatives reflect these.

"Our vision is to create a space that serves three things: the community - a place where people can come have tea, read, talk, meditate exchange ideas and thoughts; the teaching of Shaolin martial arts in all its forms; and a sanctuary to find peace and wellbeing for the mind.

“We need help to find new premises in Southampton that will meet our needs, but are also looking for any donors or supporters that would be interested in working with us on making this a reality or on our new community outreach projects.”

For those who missed the celebrations, the charity is performing at West Quay (Southampton) and Portsmouth Guildhall over the weekend.
