A DRAGON danced around Westquay as celebrations to mark the Chinese New Year continued in Southampton.

Hosted and organised by the Chinese Association of Southampton, the day of entertainment featured displays from Wutan Martial Art School and what organisers believed was the first ever dragon display carried out by a fire service - namely Hampshire Fire and Rescue.

Although a celebration of Chinese culture, other societies took centre stage with a Scottish pipe band, local ukulele group and an opera all performed.

Andy Lai, vice-chairman of the association, said: “The new year celebrations always show the start for the year ahead. "After a long, cold winter we use this celebration as a way to kickstart the year and bring in the spring.

"Regardless of group we will be showcasing a range of communities throughout the day.

"This is not just a celebration for people from China - it will incorporate aspects from all walks of life."
