IT WAS a night of celebration in Hedge End as students got the chance to showcase their musical talent.

Dozens of people attended the Rotary Musicians Competition at Wildern School on January 15.

Students had the opportunity to showcase their skills and play music in a bid to wow judges.

The event was part of the National Young Musician Competition promoted by Rotary International across the country.

Teachers at Wildern School nominated students who had reached a very high standard in music and gave them the chance to perform during the night.

Sophie Nicholson, 13, from West End, played flute and won the contest.

She will now go forward to the next round of the competition at Talbot Heath School, in Rothesay, Bournemouth.

The four stage national competition is designed to support and encourage the development of musical talent.

During the event held at Wildern, £60 was also raised to help those in poverty to gain access to a proper toilet, clean water and the information that they need to be healthy.

The event at Wildern was supported by the Hedge End Breakfast Rotary Club.
