TWO teenagers met with a Hampshire MP to discuss how more young people can get involved with refugees in Romsey and Southampton.

University students Lana Jardine and Yamina Seghir, both 18, met with Romsey and Southampton North MP and Immigration Minister Caroline Nokes to learn more about her role as minister and the work she undertakes.

The MP said it was 'rare to meet people who are so determined'.

Lana, a student at the University of Southampton, said: "We met with Caroline Nokes to discuss Unicef's campaign to fix the UK's refugee family reunion campaign and find out what she is doing to support refugees in Romsey and Southampton.

"I hope as a result of this meeting, Caroline sees that her own constituents care about the importance of family reunion and it will encourage her to broaden the definition of family to wider relatives within the UK's own immigration rules."

Yamina said: "I plan to email Southampton City Council and ask how many refugees they have resettled, and see if they can do more. I would also love to meet with Caroline again and visit her in Westminster."

Caroline said: "It was a pleasure to meet Lana and Yamina at my constituency surgery last week. I often receive correspondence from people who are concerned about the plight of refugees around the world, but it is relatively rare to meet people who are so determined to make a difference in this way.

"Hearing the story of Lana's family who have fostered refugee children with harrowing background made me enormously proud of the work my constituents are doing and I was pleased to provide some information on organisations with whom they might wish to volunteer."
