A SOUTHAMPTON shopkeeper with a paintball gun has chased off masked thugs who tried to rob his shop.

Police are appealing for witnesses after three men armed with crow bars attempted to rob Aldermoor Convenience Store on Aldermoor Road on Saturday evening.

Hampshire Police said the three men had their face covered and were confronted by the shop owner who chased them out the store with a paintball gun.

The men then got into a white Mercedes A-Class parked on Waltham Crescent and tried to make off from the scene.

Officers said that as the vehicle attempted to speed off, the owner fired several balls of bright green paint at the car, which turned right onto Aldermoor Road and then left onto Wonston Road.

Nothing was stolen but police have launched an investigation and are asking for witnesses to come forward.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Police said: "We want to hear from anyone who has seen the car used in this incident, now with distinct green paint splatters across it. If you know who is using this vehicle, please get in contact, call 101 and quote 44180073644."
