CONTROVERSIAL plans that would see a pizza chain take a spot at the former Ordnance Survey site in Southampton have been submitted.

Domino’s Pizza could open a new store at the Romsey Road site, replacing the current cafe which sits near to the Tesco Express.

If successful, the franchise believes 25 new jobs, including pizza makers, customer service staff and delivery drivers, could be created, all of whom will be recruited locally.

Within the plans are external alterations to the cafe’s shop front and a new ventilation system.

Some residents complained about the proposals during a 21-day consultation process, which closed on January 31, where objections including inconsiderate parking and potential late-night odours exuding from the development raised.

However, Dominos said that there would be an appropriate extractor system in place to deal with the smells appropriately, while a parking survey was undertaken to determine the level of available parking.

This found that the proposed four spaces would not be an inappropriate amount.

New staff hired will benefit from on the job training, which will range from dough management and food hygiene through to road safety for all delivery drivers.

A spokesperson for the firm said Domino’s would be looking for delivery drivers who could provide exceptional customer service, and demonstrate integrity, honesty and reliability, as well as being pepperoni passionate for freshly made pizza.

They added that it hoped to have opened 1,200 stores by 2021.

The plans come after Domino’s which has outlets in 75 countries recently opened its 1,000th UK store in Overton near Basingstoke in July. Domino’s has outlets in the city on Weston Lane, Shirley, The Avenue and Bitterne.
