WORK to resurface one of Southampton's busiest roads - for the first time in 16 years - has been delayed.

The work, which began this week has been postponed tonight because of the threat of snow.

Southampton City Council confirmed the decision on its Twitter page.

It said: "We have taken the decision to cancel the resurfacing work of Bassett Avenue for tonight due to weather conditions."

The resurfacing work began on Monday, It comes after a three week project of "vital" repairs to the road's drainage system.

The project started on February 12 and resulted in the complete closure of the Bassett Avenue to all city-bound traffic.

The work, by contractors Balfour Beatty, was finished three days earlier than planned.

Southampton City Council say the work is part a £1 million plus plan to repair the Bassett Avenue.

The authority say it is the first time the road has been resurfaced in 16 years.

The resurfacing work is expected to last another two weeks and involves full night time closures of all traffic, between Chilworth Roundabout and Winchester Road.

Once completed, contractors are set to return within three weeks to lay an anti-skid surface.
