The next in the 2017 – 18 Season of Live satellite broadcasts direct from the Royal Ballet in London to the big screen at the Regent in Christchurch will be a tribute to the centenary of the birth of Leonard Bernstein, The Age of Anxiety – which can be seen on Tuesday at 7.15pm.

Three Royal Ballet choreographers have come together to honour the creative genius of Leonard Bernstein, as part of the special worldwide centennial celebration of works inspired by the great composer’s music.

Leonard Bernstein was one of the first classical composers in America to achieve both popular and critical acclaim, drawing inspiration from jazz, modernism, the traditions of Jewish music and the Broadway musical. Many of Bernstein’s scores are remarkably well suited to dance. He was particularly associated with Jerome Robbins and their credits together including Fancy Free and West Side Story.

The programme includes two World Premieres of by Wayne McGregor and Christopher Wheeldon as well as the first revival, since its Premiere in 2014, of Liam Scarlett’s The Age of Anxiety set to Bernstein’s Symphony No 2 and inspired by W.H. Auden’s poem of the same title, which dealt with the disillusionment and uncertainty of the post World War II world.

Building on his distinctive creative collaborations beyond the world of dance, Wayne McGregor’s new ballet incorporates designs by artist Edmund de Waal and is set to Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms.

Christopher Wheeldon, meanwhile, collaborates with award-winning fashion designer Erdem Moralioglu to create the costumes for his new ballet.
