SHOPPERS in Southampton could find themselves lost as a retail centre brings in a 9,000-square foot maze to the city.

Westquay, in the centre of the city, will unveil a giant maze on the shopping centre’s Esplanade from Tuesday.

Shoppers are invited to try and work their way through the high hedged labyrinth which will run until April 22.

Spanning 9,000-square feet, there will be a choice of routes inside. It will be fully constructed using real hedges, stands at almost eight-feet tall and will be against the backdrop of the Old City Walls.

Westquay General Manager, Andy Collyer, said: “The maze has given Westquay another fantastic opportunity to showcase the Esplanade.

“Having a bespoke design meant we could create something vast, mapping out a route that is as challenging as possible.”

Mr Collyer added: “We are all looking forward to seeing visitors navigate themselves through the maze.”

The maze has been made to fit the precise space at Westquay, with a code for a free ice-cream the reward for finding your way out – as well as the sense of pride.

The maze will be in the same space as the temporary ice rink that was open throughout the festive period last year.

For visitors to unlock their free ice-cream, they must do so through the Westquay Plus app.

The attraction follows the ice rink and the festival of light, that returned to the Old City Walls for its second event earlier this year.

The city walls and Bargate have benefitted from a number of new attractions including the Giant Ferris Wheel last year, as well as Southampton’s dining in the sky outside the Guildhall.

Both are set to return to the city next year.
