Police were following a Volvo onto Bevois Hill after it failed to stop, before it swerved around the corner of a junction and hit a pedestrian.

The man was rushed by air ambulance to Southampton General Hospital with leg injuries. He has been described as being in a serious condition.

Police have confirmed a man has been arrested, but have not said on suspicion for what offence.

Hampshire Constabulary officers had been chasing the man through Southampton after the driver failed to stop at around 2pm yesterday.

The force also said it was reported to them that the Volvo caught fire before rolling and colliding with a BMW.

As well as the police, Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to the scene after the Volvo caught fire and crashed into the wall – wrecking the corner of the junction of Forster Road.

The fire spread to debris in the road as an engine from Eastleigh put out the fire.
