PLANS for hundreds of new homes, a country park and a relief road in Bursledon have bee approved.

Town bosses in Eastleigh have given the green light to plans for 200 new homes and a country park on the former Bursledon Car Boot site.

They also approved the proposal for a new road that will run parallel to Hamble Lane and will end at a new signal controlled junction on Bursledon Road.

Town bosses said the new road, which will be built as a priority, will help relieve congestion on Hamble Lane and it has been agreed that the current access will be closed on completion of the new road.

The site will also see a new parkland area of 10.5 hectares in size – about 14 football pitches – with a mix of public open space areas and play equipment.

As previously reported, Eastleigh Borough Council bought the land last year, after the popular Car Boot Sale closed in spring 2017.

Council leader Keith House has now welcomed the plans and said: “We have taken a proactive approach in purchasing the land of the former car boot site as we are committed to delivering homes for local people. But this needs to be done responsibly and with the needs of the local area in mind. The council is also continuing its commitment in working to deliver new homes for private rent at market value and ensure they are available for everyone including family friendly tenancies."

As previously reported, the planned housing will be a mix of new homes for sale, private rent and affordable rent.

Developer Taylor Wimpey had also pledged to guarantee an estimated £3.2m of contributions towards local infrastructure and said that the site which is located close to a number of local amenities, schools and beautiful surroundings was perfect for the development.
