TWO lanes of a main road were closed in rush hour when a lorry couldn’t get under a bridge.

The vehicle was leaving Southampton but is understood to have become stuck under the bridge at Rushington Roundabout on Friday evening.

A spokesperson for Hampshire police said: “He was coming out of the city and got to the footbridge and for some reason couldn’t get under it.

“We closed two westbound lanes of the road while we reversed down the causeway.

“There was no damage to the bridge or the lorry.

“He hadn’t hit the bridge. We did attempt to get him through the bridge however on trying we couldn’t which is why we had to put a closure on.”

Redbridge Towers resident Shelley Jones, 37, lives on the fifteenth floor of the high rise and heard sirens around 6pm.

Rushing to the window she saw traffic backed up on the westbound lanes of the Redbridge flyover.

Then about an hour later saw police cars escorting a lorry east bound down the westbound inside lane.  She said: “I saw them making their way back down the road.

“It was very interesting to watch.”

The road was shut for about an hour.
