AN INDUSTRY day for musicians will take place this week.

The event at Newtown Youth Centre will be a chance for young artists to get information on "key topics"

Organised by world music DJ Gilles Peterson, there will be information on record deals and contracts, live touring, management and booking agents, marketing and promotion, music publishign and sync licensing, and streaming and distribution. As reported the renowned DJ - who co-founded cult label Acid Jazz and signed bands like Brand New Heavies - came under fire from Southampton's music community, after he failed to find any local artists to support - despite having chosen Southampton as a 'focus city' for his Future Bubblers project. Now organisers say the industry day, which takes place this Wednesday, is intended as an "entry level opportunity" and no question will be "too basic or stupid."

They added: "The information provided is intended to be clear, jargon free, based on real life and current scenarios and actively encourages questions from the young people in the room. Spaces in the sessions are very limited so anyone who’s interested is encouraged to respond and sign up to the RSVP address asap.

"One of the principle objectives of Future Bubblers is to remove the barriers and restrictions that prevent or discourage many young emerging musical talents from pursuing a career, a profession in the world of music. Too often, a lack of knowledge or supportive networks mean that they are left confused and lacking confidence when it comes to navigating the “industry” of music."

The day is free and takes place from 11am-5pm at the youth centre on Graham Road.
