SOUTHAMPTON residents have been revealed as some of the biggest baked beans fans in the UK.

New figures reveal the city's favourite ways of eating them, with one in every two people plating them up at least once a week.

It comes as Heinz celebrates the 50th anniversary of their slogan, Beanz Meanz Heinz.

Fifty-four per cent of Southampton residents say they eat beans at least once every week, with a fifth tucking into them two or three times that.

Almost one in five also said they packed a tin away in their suitcase before their travels.

Aaron Crinion, senior brand manager at Heinz Beanz said: "Southampton loves beans, that's for sure.

"Everyone has a view on what Beanz Meanz to them and we wanted to celebrate 50 years of the Beanz Meanz Heinz slogan by finding out just how much Brits loves beans; it's great to see the vibrant city of Southampton making the top ten."

The city ranked ninth on the list, coming above Bristol, but the table was topped by Birmingham.

According to the figures, Southampton's favourite accompaniments for baked beans is cheese, followed by butter and spread, before sausages and then bacon.

More than nine of every ten city residents said they enjoyed the snack with toast, with 75 per cent of those quizzed saying them served the beans on top of the toast.

Aaron added: "Baked beans are a Southampton mealtime staple."
